A few kilometres out of Chaiten you will find yourself with an abandoned Airplane! Today you can order a coffee and visit the airplane. But how did it get there
The DC-3 was a war transport airplane that belonged to the chilean air force. In the year 1974 it was returning from Palena to Puerto Montt while suffering me mechanical failure that forced the pilot to make a landing on the Carretera Austral. No-one was harmed during the landing but the plane was heavily damaged and later abandoned.
Later Don Carlos Anabalón requested for the plane to be moved to todays location. Carlos decided to renovate the aircraft and built a house out of it!
A must see on the Carretera Austral! And even better on a gravel bike ;)
