Trip Overview

The Carretera Austral can be divided into two parts, north and south of Coyhaique. In this section you will learn all the important things when cycling the northern section starting from Puerto Varas. This trip takes about 650 kilometers on mostly paved roads and includes several ferry crossings. You will be cycling along the sea, beautiful lakes and climb up mountain passes. The climate can be challenging with rain and wind all year. The best time to go is between November and March.

Terrain/Physical Condition:

The northern part of the Carretera Austral is mostly paved and has villages every 50 – 80km. Since you are riding close to the Andes Mountain range it is almost never flat with a few challenging climbs – a medium to good fitness is required to complete the trip.

Side Trips

A few kilometers of the main road you can find more peaceful and remote areas. We recommend visiting:

  • Start your trip via Ensenada and the Reloncavi Fjord
  • Valle Mirta
  • Raul Marin Balmaceda

Trip Overview

The southern part of the Carretera Austral is considered the more wild and remote part. Starting from Coyhaique you will make your way south until eventually the road stops. This trip takes about 650 kilometers on mostly on gravel roads with a good chance of spotting wildlife. The climate can be challenging with rain and wind all year. The best time to go is between November and March.

Terrain/Physical Condition:

The southern part of the Carretera Austral is mostly on gravel roads and with fewer villages and infrastructure. The climbs can be more challenging due to the gravel roads and change of weather – a medium to good fitness is required to complete the trip.
